Butler Fire Collection Drive

  • On April 2, 2026, a fast-moving overnight fire broke out just after midnight along Main Street in Butler, New Jersey, heavily impacting the borough’s downtown business district. The blaze spread quickly through a connected row of buildings, destroying multiple businesses and damaging nearby structures, including apartments above storefronts. Fire crews from Butler and surrounding towns worked for several hours to contain the fire, which remained active into the early morning.

At least four buildings were significantly affected, and nearby properties also suffered water and smoke damage. Residents were evacuated quickly, and officials reported no fatalities or serious injuries. The American Red Cross assisted displaced residents with temporary housing and emergency support, while local churches and community organizations helped provide food, clothing, and relief items. • We are partnering with Butler United Methodist Church to support individuals impacted by the recent fire in Butler. As part of our Local Outreach Christmas Offering and outreach ministry, we will be providing $100 grocery gift cards for each of the nine men affected, helping cover one month of groceries, totaling $900.

Because our Christmas Offering has allowed us to begin serving in the greater Kinnelon area, and we are intentionally preserving those funds for upcoming community projects, this is a meaningful opportunity for our church family to engage in a hands-on way. Until Sunday, May 10, you can take a tag from the Giving Tree with specific needed items such as summer clothing, shoes, and gift cards to Walmart and Target. These gift cards allow individuals to shop for what they need with dignity.

All items will be collected and delivered in the second week of May, and anyone who would like to participate is also welcome to join the delivery team.

  • We are partnering directly with Butler United Methodist Church to respond to the needs of those impacted by the recent fire in Butler. Our efforts are specifically focused on nine men from their church community who were directly affected and are currently being supported through Butler United Methodist.

While Butler United Methodist continues to care for additional families and individuals connected to the broader community and extended relatives, our church is coming alongside them to support this specific group in a targeted and relational way.

The Care Project

In Partnership with The Care Center of New Jersey

We are delighted to announce our formal partnership with The Care Center of NJ. The Care Center of NJ has chosen our church to serve as the Area Coordinator for the Greater Kinnelon region, meaning we’re the first call when local families are facing a crisis.

The generosity of our members funds the projects we have the privilege of responding to — meals, infant supplies, children's beds, and more. It will create serving opportunities for individuals, families, and small groups in our church to meet those needs personally.

Your generous investment in The Care Project will:

  • Fund local acts of generosity throughout 2026 — including meals, infant care supplies, and school resources for families in crisis.

  • Provide hands-on projects like assembling Care Bags for Kids and building beds through the Sleep in Heavenly Peace initiative.

  • Support volunteers with Care Portal training so that our people can personally deliver hope and encouragement to others in need.

  • Offer monthly service opportunities at the Care Center’s Food Pantry in Rockaway and Montclair for individuals, couples, and families from our church to serve.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to get involved with our local outreach projects and opportunities for all ages.

  • CarePortal: Join our CarePortal Response Team and play a vital role in serving families in crisis. These trained individuals serve as the primary point of contact when a request is fulfilled — whether the need is met by providing goods or funding them. Response Team members complete a one-time 90-minute online training to gain awareness and sensitivity around the situations families may be facing. Volunteers deliver goods with a trained Response Team member to lead the interaction with families to ensure safety, consistency, and care. Click here to sign up for more information and training.

  • Food Pantry: Serve hands-on with our partners at the Care Center of New Jersey! Each month, we’ll have opportunities to support their Food Pantry at both the Rockaway and Montclair campuses. Whether you’re stocking shelves, organizing goods, or helping guests shop with dignity, this is a meaningful and compassionate way to serve. Ages 15 and up are welcome. Click here to sign up for volunteer opportunities. Once completed, please confirm with Missions and Outreach, Amanda Garcia, at Amanda@CommunityChurchSR.org.

  • Supplies Shopper: Love to shop with purpose? Step in as one of our Supplies Shoppers! Throughout the year, we have many CarePortal requests, Food Pantry needs, and seasonal outreach initiatives that require essential supplies. We need helping hands to gather items that directly bless families, students, and individuals in our community. Your shopping cart can truly make a difference!

CarePortal

  • Requests for help, such as beds, clothing, groceries, or school supplies, are submitted by agencies. As a church on the platform, we will receive these requests and decide whether to fulfill them fully, partially, or not at all. Once committed, our response team will coordinate directly with the request’s point person to arrange delivery. In most cases, items are delivered to the family’s home, but sometimes drop-off takes place at neutral public spaces such as schools or libraries.

  • Currently, CarePortal is still developing in our region (Morris, Passaic, and Essex Counties). Only a handful of churches and agencies are active, with the largest partners being Dover Public Schools and the Department of Child Social Services. By joining the platform, Care Center of New Jersey and The Community Church have the opportunity to expand outreach beyond Dover and into our own community through additional potential agencies, such as local schools and communities.

  • Through this partnership, The Care Center of New Jersey’s and The Community Church’s outreach teams will expand its efforts into the greater Kinnelon area. CarePortal gives us the opportunity to respond directly to practical needs, build meaningful relationships with families, and share our faith by meeting people where they are, demonstrating that our service flows from the love of Christ.
